This Year's Boat Trip with the Seaport Museum

I just wanted to fill everyone in about this year's abortive boat trips. It was a great disappointment to everyone that we were never able to successfully hit the waves this year. We had sails scheduled twice, but a combination of scheduling issues, weather and mechanical troubles foiled pour plans both times. We'll be working on trying to "bulletproof" next year's events so that it'll be "smooth sailing."

Schooner Pioneer, the 1885 sailing vessel, and Draw-Mania!, the long-running downtown draw-a-thon and variety show, will be offering artists, art students, and all comers, the opportunity to draw and paint during a two-hour Pioneer sail. You’ll have the opportunity to draw three live art models, the harbor, shoreline, other boats, and the Pioneer’s crew as they hoist sail and go about their tasks! You can even help raise the sails if you want to!

Please bring your own art materials, bearing in mind that there will be no space on deck for easels. Pioneer can provide extra water, paper towel, and even a place to keep work till ashore, and once ashore, fixative for those who wish to use it.

The vessel, first launched in 1885, was built as an iron-hulled sloop to carry cargo along the Delaware River and was even featured in an episode of "Boardwalk Empire,” and frequently seen in NYC tourism promotions.

We will depart at 4:00 pm; return at 6:00. Pioneer is docked on the South side of Pier 16, (past the big ship Peking) on the East River. Walk east on Fulton Street and cross South Street to arrive on Pier 16.
You are welcome to bring a picnic lunch, afternoon snack, a bottle of wine or other favorite beverage to enjoy while sketching under sail!

Jerry's Draw-mania! --a brand new weekly event in a brand new store

Starting on Tuesday, September 9th., we instituted a weekly figure drawing session in partnership with the Jerry's International Palette Shop!

The event is called Jerry's Draw-mania! and occurs every Tuesday, from 9-11pm. It's a fun, relaxed figure sketching session featuring one great model, for ONLY $5!!

 

Jerry's International Palette Shop is a great new art store in NYC at 111 Fourth Avenue (site of the original Utrecht Art store, for you old-timers). Jerry's offers a full range of art supplies, but it has a particularly full range of products for painters. More tubes of paint than you've ever seen in one place, I recon! They are the first New York outpost of the popular Jerry's Artarama chain. They also offer a number of exciting events and workshops in their store after hours. Draw-mania! HOBOKEN!

April 3rd was our first real Draw-mania Hoboken event, and it was a resounding success! Our first event went as planned, but scary weather reports kept most people from attending. April's event was mostly smooth sailing! We has a great crowd in attendance, and people seemed to be really draing up a storm. We had 5 terrific models, including 2 new faces (but they will be back!) and entertainment provided by three outstanding comedians, Boris Khaykin (MTV, Bath House Brothers Variety Hour), Nathan Rand (Invitation to a Beheading), and Tim Warner (colleges and comedy festivals all over the place) and two musicians, Calem Ingram and Sho Handa, playing selections from their newly released album Making it Possible.

We'll be back at Teak on the Hudson May 1, 2013 for the next Draw-mania! Hoboken. You should be there!

Welcome To NY Figure Drawing

Some of you may already know me! I've been running a life drawing group in the summers here in Manhattan, on and off, for something like ten years. A few years ago, I brought the group to Meetup.com. That helped reach a lot of new people, and it helped to streamline the process of scheduling the sessions. The meetup site interface isn't really a great place for interacting, however. there's a lot more I want to share, and a blog seemed like a better place to offer suggestions and to get feedback. I'm going to try to keep this site filled with new and useful content, including information on:

Materials and techniques
Beginner's suggestions
Info on my group and all the others in NYC that I know about
Info on running a sketch group
Info for models and artists
And of course a little blog-worthy pontification
Art (of course)
